Christmas Themed Lesson for Speech Therapy

themes in speech Dec 12, 2022

Christmas is right around the corner and sometimes we find ourselves burning out by this time of year! We wanted to provide you with some fun and engaging Christmas Themed activities you can use in your speech and language sessions this season!

Activity #1: Begin with a Christmas themed book! We love using the "That's Not My" series with our early intervention kiddos as well as our preschool/kindergarten students! This companion comes with a variety of activities you can use to target themed vocabulary, attributes, following directions, emotions, spatial concepts, negation, verbs and more! Paired with play-props makes it an engaging way for students to participate in the activity while learning and practicing new skills. Grab the book companion by clicking here.

Activity #2: It's time for the critter clinic! We talk about this toy a lot but BOTH Anna and I LOVE using the critter clinic all year long as we adapt it for different themes and therapy sessions. It's just SOO good! Anna has made it super easy by creating an INCREDIBLE product that transforms your critter clinic into a gingerbread house, a winter wonderland and in this case Santa's Town! Have a blast setting up Santa's town and helping Santa and Mrs. Claus get ready for the holidays using the provided play-prop pieces while targeting a variety of goals. Practice the spatial concepts "on", "in",  "beside" as you place the presents around the critter clinic and play scenes. You can also practice following directions and have the child listen to present goes in a specific door . These are two of TONNES of goals you can work on in this one activity...it may be the only additional activity you need! Grab the resource by clicking here.

Activity #3: End your session with making some cookies for Santa! I know we share a lot of our favourites with you BUT this Melissa and Doug Cookie Set is one of my ALLL time favourite pretend food sets that I've ever purchased. You can target SO much with this one toy! I love using it for describing, themed vocab, /k/ sound, /s-blends/, syllable segmentation, initial & final sounds, following directions, sequencing, requesting, verbs and expanding utterances. Check it out by clicking here!

*Of course you could use construction paper or your own cookie set and decorate them for Santa too!
